A great pattern for bulky handspun yarn; because it's knit top-down, you can easily make it exactly as long as you want without having to guess when to start decreasing. The pattern suggests a crochet edge, but if you don't like to crochet, you could knit the last 4 or 5 rows in seed stitch instead.

The stats:
Yarn: about 80-90 yards of bulky weight
Needles: set of size US 11 double pointed, optional 16" circular to switch to once it's big enough
Skills needed: knit in the round, kfb increase, simple crochet
